328 soldiers are buried at the British and Commonwealth cemetery in Brunssum. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the town’s liberation, honorary citizenship of Brunssum was bestowed on them. Our assignment was to produce a document in the run up to this unique event.
The cemetery is situated in the centre of town, so many local residents have a special bond with this exceptional place. This provided the starting point for a unique mini-documentary honouring these fallen heroes, complemented by the emotional stories of surviving relatives.
The film drew an enthusiastic response, with positive reactions from home and abroad, and was picked up on by no less than the BBC after its launch. When the film was completed, the municipality decided to release the film on DVD.
